Education at Bhartiya Skill Development University means developing sensitivity in students towards the professional, social, moral and aesthetic dimensions of their lives. It enables them to take responsibility of their actions and inactions, articulate their thoughts effectively, and engage in constructive disagreements when necessary. The competencies referred to as action competence, social competence, and methodological competence in vocational education are further enhanced in a nuanced manner within General Education.

General education supports students in leading a life that enables them to accept and master the challenges of everyday life. In addition to imparting knowledge on social topics and issues, the task of General Education is to develop appropriate use of English Language and means of communication in students. This is how training becomes education.

Preparing students for the challenges of the future

The task of General Education is to develop and promote the mentioned skills and abilities:

  • Ability to communicate with others in a direct and in-depth way, to recognize moods and reactions, and to recognize needs
  • Ability to present oneself appropriately, to give one’s own ideas a chance, to critically scrutinize one’s own presentation and presentation of others
  • Ability to move in different social and cultural situations and to accept other points of view and thought patterns
  • Ability in independent thinking and in taking unusual paths of thought
  • Ability in the selection of information and in grasping the deeper meaning or validity of information (conceptual knowledge before factual knowledge)
  • Ability in the use of digital tools and media offerings
  • Ability for self-determined learning – within and outside of an institutionalized situation
  • Ability to work together in a team – inside and outside a shared work location

Key features of the Faculty of General Education

The Faculty of General Education provides a comprehensive curriculum encompassing methodological, social, personal, and professional competencies that complement the specialized skill training offered by the various domain faculties. It aims to equip students with essential knowledge and abilities to effectively manage various aspects of individual, occupational, and societal life.

Aligned with the Swiss Skill Education system, the General Education curriculum adopts a cross-thematic approach, encompassing diverse aspects such as culture, ethics, identity, socialization, politics, ecology, law, economy, and technology.

At the core of General Education teaching lies the promotion of language competence, self-awareness, social adeptness, and methodological proficiency, coupled with the development of subject-specific expertise.

In addition to developing the generic competencies, the General Education curriculum covers two major Learning areas:

Language

Promotion of Language Competence:
The development of the students’ receptive, productive, and normative language competencies is prioritized to enable students to effectively navigate personal, professional, and social realities. The promotion of language competence is primarily action-oriented, encompassing reading, writing, listening, speaking, and composing.
